History of the Faculty

The Faculty of Navigation of the Maritime University of Szczecin continues the activity of such department at the State Maritime School, located at 19 Aleja Piastów, Szczecin. Established in 1947, the Faculty was an outcome of a political decision to transfer the activities of a similar educational unit from Gdynia to Szczecin. Another political decision restored the previous status quo, transferring the Faculty back to Gdynia in 1953.

The Faculty of Navigation returned in the academic year 1963/64 when a state maritime school (PSM) was re-established in Szczecin, housed in the MUS main building in Wały Chrobrego. In 1968 the State Maritime School was converted to a Maritime School of Higher Education (WSM), with two faculties: Navigation and Marine Engineering, commencing its operation in the academic year 1969/1970. The year 2004 was another milestone as the continually developing school of higher education received a status of the academy, renamed Akademia Morska w Szczecinie, known abroad as the Maritime University of Szczecin. In the first years of the Faculty of Navigation, two courses were offered: Maritime Transport and Deep-sea Fishing. For several years the bachelor level program was offered, then in the years 1974-1989 master's degree studies were run. Since 1989, students of the Navigation Faculty attend engineer degree studies, some continue studying for a master's degree.

In 1980 a new program of studies - Port Operations - was launched in the field of Transport, initially as evening part-time courses, from 1982 as a full-time master's degree course. In 1991 the program was modified as Ports and Fleet Operations. In 1999 an Inter-faculty Institute of Transport was formed, based on the previous units of the Navigation Faculty. The Institute made up a basis for a new faculty: Transport Engineering and Economics, established in 2002.

In 2019,  due to the changes in the University's reorganisation following the Act 2.0 Law on Higher Education and Science - part of the Navigation Faculty has separated into a new unit: The Faculty of Computer Science and Telecommunications, while the institute-based structure of the faculties was changed to a department-based structure. In 1997 the Faculty of Navigation received rights to confer a doctor’s degree in technical sciences, discipline: Geodesy, Surveying and Cartography, in 2010 in the discipline Transport. In 2015 the Faculty was authorized to confer a post-doctoral degree (Pol.: doktor habilitowany) in technical sciences, discipline: Transport.

The recent development of our University in terms of facilities, staff competence and expanding numbers of courses provided, resulted in the Polish parliament's decision to upgrade MUS status within the Polish education system. On the 1st of September 2022, the Polish name of the MUS was changed from "Akademia Morska" to "Politechnika Morska". The word "politechnika" comes from ancient Greek - polýtechnos - and means proficient in many arts. In the Polish educational system, a higher education institution called "politechnika" corresponds to a university or institute of technology in the generally accepted educational terminology used in English-speaking countries. Our name in English though, will not be changed and remains the Maritime University of Szczecin.
