Słowa kluczowe: wastesustainability waste managementpollutionship-generated wastesustainable transportprotection of the marine environmentcircular economymodel

Abstrakt: The manuscript presents the management of waste from marine vessels and cargo handling companies in a selected European Union port. The main objective of the paper is to analyse and evaluate the existing waste management model in the port of Szczecin in the context of circular economy. The expert research carried out is aimed, inter alia, at identifying which of the solutions currently in use need to be improved from an environmental perspective. These measures could serve as a basis for the development of green logistics chains for waste generated in connection with the organisation of shipping. What is of particular importance in this regard is the information flow, which preferably should be an integral part of an international IT system enabling tracking of waste streams from their place origin to final disposal. In light of the above, it is particularly important to look for solutions which will support the creation and adoption of models providing sufficient control over the entirety of green waste management activities, in line with the circular economy concept.

Abstrakt: The development of smart sustainable megapolises is associated with the formation of city multifloormanufacturing clusters (CMFMCs) in them directly in the residential area in order to reduce the supplychain from the manufacturer to consumers. Additive technologies (ATs) belong to green technologiesbecause they are considered environmentally sustainable due to less production waste and the abilityto reuse of product materials within the circular economy concept. Sustainable development of ATsand additive manufacturing management has become a priority sphere for scientific research, and theuse of ATs in the city manufacturing has become any daily reality. Nevertheless, the issues of additivemanufacturing management within the CMFMCs have not yet been sufficiently studied. The primarygoal of this study was to examine the possibilities of additive manufacturing management in theCMFMCs of the megapolis due to the rational facilities multi-floor layout in production buildings, considering the structure of city manufacturing and business process reengineering related to the needsof the production services market. This paper presents a novel model of facilities multi-floor layout inthe production buildings of the CMFMCs, considering the structure of city manufacturing, morpho-logical analysis of the additive manufacturing equipment (AME) used, the balance of material andenergy flows under infrastructure capacity limitations of megapolis. The model was verified based ona case study for various options of the floor-by-floor grouping of AME in a building of the CMFMCs.Management solutions for maintaining the flow balance of material, energy and water resources in theCMFMCs are discussed. The results may be useful for additive manufacturing management in an ur-ban environment, taking into account the needs of the production services market in the megapolis.

Abstrakt: In small vessels, for example, yachts, polymer–glass composites are mainly used for their construction. However, the disposal and/or recycling of composite units is very difficult. It is advisable to solve the problem of disposing of post-consumer items as soon as possible. Therefore, alternative, environmentally friendly, but also durable and safe construction materials are being sought. Such materials can be polymer–natural composites, which can be used as a potential material (alternative to polymer–glass composites) for the construction of small vessels. However, its performance properties should be investigated as new construction materials. The possibility of using polymer–hemp composites was assessed in terms of safety, i.e., the fire resistance of these materials. This paper compares selected characteristics that the reaction of composite materials has to fire with glass fiber and hemp fiber reinforcements. During the study, a natural composite reinforced with hemp fabric was investigated. Based on the laboratory test, it was found that this composite showed better susceptibility to energy recycling, with a relatively small deterioration in fire resistance compared to the composite reinforced with glass fiber. This material could therefore be a potential construction material for small vessels if we consider fire resistance in terms of the safety of the vessel’s operation.

Tytuł: Assessment of ship manoeuvring safety in waterway systems by relative navigational risk

Autor/Autorzy: Stanisław Gucma, Andrzej Bąk, Wojciech Ślączka

Miejsce publikacji:  Archives of Transport

Rok: 2022

Słowa kluczowe: sea waterway system, navigational risk, navigation safety on sea waterways

Abstrakt: The safety of vessels navigating in the sea waterway system is ensured by fulfilling the acceptable restrictions called safe ship operation conditions in that system. The assessment of navigation safety is particularly important when the conditions for safe operation of ships in the waterway system are changed concerns increasing the maximum parameters of vessels, increasing the allowable hydrometeorological conditions or changing the minimum tug assistance. The article presents a method for assessing navigation safety when the conditions for the safe operation of vessels in the waterway system get changed. The method uses two indicators, which are difference in navigation risks and relative navigation risk. To determine the navigational risk, algorithms were developed for calculating the probability of accidents caused by the deterioration of navigation conditions and technical failure of ship equipment and tugs. Another algorithm was developed for calculating the consequences of the accidents that involve blocking a waterway by a ship anchoring in an emergency, grounding, impact of the ship against a port structure or moored ship and a collision with another ship in motion. The method developed for assessing navigation safety by means of relative navigation risk can be used in practice when changing the conditions for safe operation of vessels in the waterway system and when the system is modernized. Navigational safety management is a decision process that is implemented in the loop presented in the article. The acceptable risk is determined on the basis of vessel traffic intensity and ship parameters defined by safe operation conditions for a given waterway system. Relative navigational risk may be used in assessment and comparison of various conditions of safe ship operation. The probability of an accident caused by ship's moving outside the available navigable area due to technical failures of ship equipment or tugs is determined, depending on the type of port waterway and the manoeuvres performed.

Abstrakt: As the maritime transport of containers continues to grow and container ships change in terms of design and construction, it is important to ensure the appropriate level of safety for this type of transport. Over the decades, the size and cargo capacity of container ships have been changing, and so have their manoeuvring restrictions and required stability criteria. It seems that changes in the regulations, technological development and increased stability requirements are not yielding satisfactory results – the causes of container ship accidents continue to show similar patterns. The present article refers to the problem of ensuring safety in sea container transport, with a particular focus on cargo processes. Its purpose is to determine cause-and-effect relations leading to the loss of containers at sea, and to develop a model of loading that could significantly raise the level of safety of container transport. The article provides a general description of threats to ships related to weather conditions, loading methods or stability limitations. A statistical analysis of the occurrence of damage and/or loss of cargo from container ships was carried out and the risk of cargo loss was assessed on the basis of data from 2015‒2019. A Pareto diagram was used for this purpose. The authors present the concept of the container ship loading model, which may contribute to increasing the safety of shipping in the future.

Słowa kluczowe: LNG, road transport, Świnoujście terminal, minimization of energy losses, energy efficiency, fuel

Abstrakt: This study characterizes the distribution chain of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Poland, using the terminal in Świnoujście as the “source of LNG”. The focus is primarily on the possibility of LNG distribution for road transport, taking into account the effective use of its energy potential. During the transport and storage of LNG it was found that the evaporation of LNG, the so-called boil-off gas (BOG), is a significant problem that leads to an increased pressure in the tank. Therefore, the possibility of using BOG in individual links of the LNG supply chain is indicated. One prospect is its compression to high pressure, which produces compressed natural gas (CNG) fuels. Thus, this paper specifies the influence of the initial BOG gas pressure on the unit compression work and analyses the change in the compression unit work, which depends on the final CNG fuel pressure, with a specific assumption for the BOG pressure.

Abstrakt: This article concerns the assessment of the level of risk at the stage of construction of a seaport, with particular emphasis on selected adverse incidents that can significantly affect the timeliness of the investment. In this article, the matrix method was used to analyse and evaluate the level of risk, and statistical analysis and case studies were used to identify incidents occurring during the port construction project. This allowed the identification of incidents with the highest probability of occurrence during the port construction process and to determine their impact on environmental pollution and the timeliness and success of the investment. The risk analysis performed identified 15 typical incidents of technical nature. The determined risk level for these incidents is at a moderate level or lower, which can be considered acceptable. For all undesirable incidents the values of probability and loss levels have been averaged, because e.g., a fire can have an extremely different dimension and can cause a different scale of losses. Analysis presented in the paper indicate the need to develop procedures for proceeding during the implementation of significant technical tasks to minimize the level of risk of adverse incidents and their consequences.

Słowa kluczowe: inland waterway transport, modeling, supply chain

Abstrakt: Making transport sentences requires taking into account many external and internal factors dependent on changes taking place on the shipping market. The place, time and type of transported cargo, etc., have an impact on the complexity of the transport system structure, which is why it is important to explore the possibilities and create transport optimization models throughout the entire cargo supply chain and analyze issues related to their organization, which affects the safety and reliability of this type of systems. The aim of the article is to present and analyze the concept of the agro cargo supply chain model using inland navigation, in the relations between Poland and the Federal Republic of Germany on the example of the Capital Group OT Logistics S.A. (OTL SA Capital Group). Taking into account the complexity and structure of transport tasks, it is important to look for optimal solutions in the field of transport. Each supply chain model includes only certain selected factors that have a limited impact on the volatility of the transport. It is not possible to build a model that would fully recreate the behavior of the object, with all possible external influences. The article considers the optimization model of inland wheat transport to final consumers, which predicts a constant demand for cereal loads in certain time segments. This model does not provide any rapid domestic fluctuations in demand for wheat at certain time intervals.

Słowa kluczowe: analysis of propulsion systems, inland waterway vessels, drive system selection criteria

Abstrakt: The paper analyses the propulsion systems of inland waterway vessels according to the criteria of economic efficiency, ecology and safety. The professional experience of the authors and their expert knowledge indicate that always the increase of safety level as well as ecological solutions are realized at the expense of economic efficiency. Therefore, arguing for the result of such analysis, the features of water bodies, port infrastructure and elements which should influence the selection of propulsion systems, features of various types of power and fuels with their energy value guaranteeing the swimming range were described. Types of propulsion systems were characterized and a model of selection of propulsion system to the type of sailing was presented. The analysis presented in the article is necessary for a reliable assessment of the accuracy of the selection of the propulsion system for the actual conditions of operation of sea and inland waterway vessels, i.e. for the type of the vessel and its suitability to perform operational tasks on specific waterways.

Abstrakt: This paper examines the issues of designing optimization tasks with the objective of ensuring the safety and continuation of transportation processes. Modelling the processes that are a consequence of a breakdown is a crucial issue enabling an increase of safety at selected stages of transport. This paper elaborates on the matter of modelling hazardous situations resulting from an uncontrolled LNG release due to a crash or damage to a ship’s hull. This paper demonstrates subsequent stages of modelling along with theoretical assumptions and finally it presents the results of simulation calculations for various scenarios of LNG releases. The article shows the complexity of modelling at a time when variable atmospheric conditions occur, which hinder the planning of rescue operations in the event of an uncontrolled LNG release into the atmosphere. It needs to be remembered that making decisions in critical situations and developing proper procedures at a time when people’s lives are at risk or in the face of an environmental pollution incident constitutes one of the most significant components of effective management in transport. Two LNG release scenarios are presented in this article: catastrophic rupture and leak, for which danger zone dimensions were calculated. Simulations were conducted with the use of a tool called Phast ver. 8.23 for LNG. Calculations were made in a function of variable weather conditions and for two values of Pasquill coefficients.

Abstrakt: A paper presents problems related to the safe operation of wind turbine installation vessels in port waterways. It presents a developed method for determining maximum safe lengths of blades of wind turbines loaded transversely on a jack-up vessel leaving a given port. In this method, the safety criterion for navigation is the acceptable risk of accidents, whose scenarios are determined by the identification of hazards in the studied waterway. Based on this safety criterion, the confidence level of the width of the safe maneuvering area of the loaded jack-up vessel and the maximum safe lengths of the transversely loaded wind turbine blades, respectively, are determined.

Słowa kluczowe: inland waterway transport,  transport efficiency,  transport management,  waterways parameters

Abstrakt: The article focuses on the analysis of the relation between the guaranteed parameters of the waterway and the dimensions of the inland ships. This article focuses on the consideration of how the change of the allowable ship draft affects the value of the efficiency index. Design/methodology/approach: In this way, it was obtained that the transport efficiency is linearly dependent on the draft of the vessel, so if, despite the possibility of loading the vessel into allowable draft, it is impossible due to the parameters of the waterways, the overall transport efficiency may decrease to a greater extent. Changes in load capacity is another factor influencing the effectiveness of the use of inland ships in the conditions of their operation on Polish inland waterways. Findings: The study analyzes the impact of this parameter on the shipowners decisions regarding investment in fleet maintenance. Practical implications: The results of the research will help to achieve the means of water transport to the limited ones in the way of natural or technical parameters of the infrastructure of Polish waters. Originality value: The results of the research complement the current knowledge on matching the parameters of specific inland vessels that provide services on a given route with the parameters of inland waterways, taking into account the dynamics of occurring negative changes on Polish waterways.

Abstrakt: This paper presents the challenges encountered in the dimensional control of ships, platforms, and offshore units. This novel approach utilizes machine learning (MLP—Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network) for three-dimensional (3D) spatial coordinate transformations when only three common points are known. The proposed method was verified based on laboratory and field data. The main issue was to provide a sufficient number of valid training points. The oversampling method was used to meet this criterion. The achieved results indicate equal or better accuracy when the points were located inside the adjustment points array. In the case where the points lay outside this array, no improvement in the accuracy of the transformation was observed. The neural approach restores the transformation symmetry, and in some cases, such as the study of deformation of engineering objects, breaks the symmetry rather than restoring it.

Słowa kluczowe: Charging stations, electromobility, European Green Deal

Abstrakt: The increase of market share of electric vehicles in the private transport sector is one of the main postulates
of European transport policy. Discussions on electromobility primarily highlight the role of vehicles themselves, neglecting the importance of infrastructure necessary to make the operation of these vehicles possible. The article aims to analyse the deployment of vehicle charging stations, and to assess the existing network compared to the adopted documents. The article presents the European legal base and the most important strategic documents addressing the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, including the concept of the European Green Deal. The analysis covers the market of electric vehicles in Europe in the years 2012 - 2021, and indicates the leading countries as well as those where the development rate is not satisfying. The authors identify the largest market players selling electric vehicles and their market share. Last part of the article examines the existing deployment of charging stations. These considerations may help to identify differences between the various countries in the number of charging points, and in the level of implementation of the existing European electromobility strategies. In addition, the analyses provide the basis for pinpointing bottlenecks in the European electromobility campaign, but also allow us to identify necessary investment projects to be executed as soon as possible, aimed to build a coherent public charging infrastructure.

Abstrakt: Increasing demand for new energy sources requires the use of new substances in the production of energy or at least innovative application of the already known compounds. Considering the above, LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) is more and more often used as fuel, as the growing pollution of the environment and rapid climate changes force the reduction of emissions of sulphur and nitrogen oxides to the environment. Liquid methane no longer contains sulphur oxides in any form because they are removed during the gas methane liquefaction process. In view of the above, this type of fuel is perceived as a good alternative to classical fuels used in maritime transport. Especially due to the fact that, in accordance with the guidelines of the white paper prepared at the request of the-then Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency (TEN-T EA), 30% of road transport at distances greater than 300 [km] will have been replaced by rail and sea transport by 2030. Additionally, a network of gas bunkering points for sea vessels will have been established by 2025. This proves the growing demand for new sources of clean energy, which will reduce the emission of sulphur oxides or nitrogen oxides to the environment. The article presents the effect of the type of unsealing, the method of release and the type of place of spreading the gas cloud resulting from the release of LNG from the Q-flex container vessel. The article presents the simulation of scenarios for immediate and continuous leaks of LNG in the case of unsealing created above the water and ground level.

Takie badania umożliwiają opracowanie procedur bezpieczeństwa i algorytmów postępowania w eksploatacyjnych stanach awaryjnych.

Abstrakt: 3D printing technology was developed nearly 30 years ago. One of its characteristics is that instead of removing materials, 3D printing creates 3D elements directly from CAD models, adding one layer of material on another. This offers a beneficial capability of making complex elements in terms of shape and materials, impossible to be manufactured by traditional methods. Owing to intensive research in recent years, considerable progress has been achieved in the development and commercialisation of new innovative processes of 3D printing by fused deposition modeling (FDM), including printing of composite materials. The study outlines the main methods of creating polymer composite structures using FDM technology.

Autor/Autorzy: Agnieszka Kalbarczyk-Jedynak, Wojciech Ślączka

Miejsce publikacji: New Trends in Production Engineering

Rok: 2018

Słowa kluczowe: : BLEVE, LNG, Phast, danger zones, domino effect

Abstrakt: The development of new technologies, the use and transport of LNG increases the number of investments that may mutually affect their safety on account of a domino effect. It means that a breakdown caused by one of the business entities may contribute to the escalation of a problem through thermal energy emission in another entity. The energy absorbed in an adjacent technological process line may cause irreparable damage despite the security measures employed. When planning an investment of a pioneering nature, one ought to consider not only the modern technologies used in a newly designed installation, but one must also pay attention to the direct neighbourhood of other industrial plants and the planned infrastructure, e.g. for gas transport or transhipment. Such a synergistic approach guarantees the safety of undertaken activities and ensures a stable, breakdown-free operation of all the business entities located in a given area. This paper discusses the issue of mutual influence exerted by two independent entities located within a small distance of one another, i.e. salt processing plant and a vessel transporting an LNG mixture. The authors considered a situation in which a breakdown occurs in an industrial plant and in which the released energy causes damage to a tank shell of an LNG carrying vessel on an inland fairway. In the examined situation the types of risks arising from LNG tank shell damage on-board an inland vessel were defined and the dimensions of the resulting danger zones were determined in a function of concentration of individual LNG components as well as the pressure and temperature generated inside the tank. The shape of the tank was also taken into consideration, since it affects fractioning in the course of the release of the substance accumulated in it. The analysis was conducted on the basis of DNV Phast 7.11 software.

Abstrakt: This work indicates that new and innovative materials used in the construction of floating and stationary marine structures can contribute to increased operational safety in addition to reduced service costs and frequency and other reduced operating costs, including the costs of staff and running maintenance. Such materials include metal-ceramic composites whose properties, such as high resistance to abrasive wear, favourable coefficient of friction, good thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion, allow them to be used in tribological pairs in mechanisms, control elements and actuators of various devices operating in marine power plants, thereby increasing their operational reliability. Properties of metal-ceramic composite foams, i.e. vibration and noise damping, good thermal insulation performance, dissipation of electromagnetic waves and absorption of explosive energy, make them ideal for use in shipbuilding and construction of drilling towers, at the same time increasing the levels of comfort during operation. Composite metal-ceramic foams can significantly reduce the effects of fires as they are durable, water-resistant and creep resistant thermal insulators which can limit the destruction (deformation) of steel structures. This paper presents proposals for the application of these materials to selected technical solutions in offshore structures.

Abstrakt: The article presents the genesis of safety assessment of LNG tankers, along with safety criteria. The utilitarian need to carry out simulation research risk assessment in respect of a LNG carrier manoeuvring in restricted areas has been justified . As a standard vessel an oil tanker has been assumed meeting the authorisation requirements of the the selected LNG terminal. The ship’s operational conditions have been identified and correlated with the manoeuvres in the terminal’s area. The mathematical models of basic manoeuvres have been built taking into account their execution by admitted to the research ship depending on the possible types of propulsion systems that meet the ecological requirements of navigational zone. In the mathematical description the characteristics of the geometry of the hull (the length over all, breadth, draught) and vessel movement parameters in hydro-meteorological conditions have been taken into account. Diagnosis has been provided for and the mathematical description has been made in respect of the critical manoeuvres in relation to the ship navigation’s safety on the fairway and terminal’s areas. The initial conditions and boundaries have been determined. Simulation studies can be conducted with the use of the software based on dynamic modelling of the designed system as assumed for the purpose of research. Studies can be located in the areas and fairways not technically verified so far.. The opportunities have been presented to conduct research using different methods of risk assessment.
